FBPDA in the community…

World Suicide Prevention Day presented by Tampa Bay Suicide Prevention Task Force

On October 14th, FBPDA set up our information table at the James Haley VA Hospital for the World Suicide Prevention Day presented by Tampa Bay Suicide Prevention Task Force hosted by the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. The community resource fair had many tables and attendees included VA Hospital staff, many active military soldiers, and family members and friends that have been affected by suicide tragedies.

Guest speakers included Grace Terry, MSW, who talked about her struggles and her coping with difficult memories and emotions, Emily Surak, who is Miss Central Florida Outstanding Teen, who gave a wonderful talk about teens who talk about suicide and when to get adults involved. Another speaker was Jesse Collins, PhD, LMHC, NCC, PA. His talk was about “Resilience is in your Pocket”. The last speaker was Al Ruechel, Senior Anchor of Bay News 9 who has had several people he knows die by suicide including a dear friend and co-worker.

There were tables of crafts for children to do and an interpretive dance was done by the Synchrony Dance Company. The last moments of the event included a candlelight vigil.

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Out of the Darkness Walk

October 28th was a beautiful day and Sims Park in New Port Richey held the “Out of the Darkness” walk hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). There were hundreds of folks who came to connect and talk with others who have survived the tragic loss of a loved one to suicide. Teams and attendees came together to listen to personal stories of heartbreak and loss, followed by a cage full of white doves released to commemorate their loved ones.

A variety of Pasco County community groups were in attendance to support the event as well as our information table. Many people were interested to learn more about BPD and our support and education groups.

DJ Creas inspiring words and music kept the lively crowd entertained afterwards and AFSP had a huge table full of items for their raffle.
