Navigating the Holidays with DBT Skills: A Guide for the Dinner Table

By Emma Liston

The holiday season is often filled with joy, laughter, and cherished moments with loved ones. However, for many, it can also bring about stress and emotional challenges, especially around the dinner table. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills offer valuable tools to help individuals navigate through these moments with mindfulness and emotional resilience.

            1.         Mindfulness:

Practice being present at the table, savoring each bite and engaging fully in the conversation. Mindfulness can help you stay grounded and appreciate the positive aspects of the holiday gathering.

            2.         Emotion Regulation:

Acknowledge and validate your emotions without judgment. If a conversation becomes intense, take a moment to identify your emotions and use deep breathing to regulate them. Remember, it’s okay to feel and express your emotions.

            3.         Interpersonal Effectiveness:

When discussing potentially sensitive topics, use “DEAR MAN” (Describe, Express, Assert, Reinforce, Mindful, Appear confident, Negotiate) to communicate effectively. This skill helps you express your needs while maintaining respect for others.

            4.         Distress Tolerance:

Accept that not every conversation will go smoothly. If faced with challenging discussions, practice “ACCEPTS” (Activities, Contributing, Comparisons, Emotions, Pushing away, Thoughts, Sensations) to manage distress and refocus your attention.

            5.         Wise Mind:

Strive to find a balance between emotional and rational thinking. By accessing your “Wise Mind,” you can respond to situations with a thoughtful and considered approach, avoiding impulsive reactions.

            6.         Self-Soothing:

Bring comforting objects or engage in activities that provide a sense of calm. Having a self-soothing toolkit can be invaluable during moments of tension, allowing you to manage stress and maintain composure.

            7.         Objective Effectiveness:

Clarify your objectives in social interactions. Focus on finding common ground rather than getting caught up in disagreements. By keeping the bigger picture in mind, you can foster a positive atmosphere.

Remember that incorporating these DBT skills is a gradual process. The holiday season may present challenges, but by practicing mindfulness, emotional regulation, and effective communication, you can foster a more enjoyable and harmonious experience around the dinner table. Embracing these skills allows for personal growth and stronger connections with those you cherish during this special time of year.
