Are you or someone you love looking for referrals to a comprehensive therapeutic program? We’ve compiled a list of therapists in Florida to help.

FBPDA Policy on Providing Referrals

FBPDA strives to provide information to consumers on treatment providers in Florida who specialize in treating Borderline Personality Disorder. FBPDA recommends Evidence-Based Treatment for all mental health problems. New, evidence-based treatments are being developed as the research grows. Currently, Dialectical Behavior Therapy is the most widely researched treatment for BPD with 44 independent studies showing it is more effective than typical treatments. Therefore, FBPDA will strive to collect, publish and share information about providers who are utilizing evidence-based treatment, particularly DBT.

Since there is currently a dearth of comprehensive DBT programs in Florida, FBPDA will also publish and share information about providers who strive towards providing fully comprehensive evidence-based treatment but who may not have the resources or full training. That is called “DBT Informed”. All provider information will be in this format:

– Provider or program name
– Location and contact information
– Training
– Population treated (adults, children, teens)
– Modes of treatment provided

FBPDA cannot be held accountable for whether that information is accurate or not. It is up to the consumer to educate themselves on what constitutes an effective treatment and provider or to find out any other information desired. Please read and accept following disclaimer to access the referral pages:

FBPDA, as an organization, encourages the use of DBT therapists who are intensively trained and DBT programs that are as comprehensive and adherent as the therapy designed by the DBT founder, Marsha Linehan. However, since the certification process for DBT is expected to be completed sometime in 2014, and since intensively trained DBT therapists are not practicing in every region of Florida, it is up to the consumer to learn the questions to ask to insure that the provider is adequately trained to do adherent, evidence-based treatment for the specific needs of the BPD client (See below for tips for finding a DBT therapist).

FBPDA does not assume responsibility for the outcome of any referrals provided.

Finding the Right Professional

For the convenience of our stakeholders throughout Florida, we have made a list of various mental health professionals who have expressed an interest in working with patients who have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder and their loved ones. Please note that when making the decision about hiring a mental health provider, you may want to address the following areas:

  • How long has the professional been practicing?
  • What experience do they have in treating borderline personality disorder?
  • Have they undergone any specific training in treating individuals with BPD?
  • To what extent do they believe individuals diagnosed with BPD can recover?
  • Does the professional focus on any particular type of therapy? Is the therapy and Evidence-Based Practice? (SAMHSA EBP Resource Center)
  • If the clinician utilizes Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), how much DBT specific training have they had? 2-Day Overview? Intensive 10 day training? Are they certified through the DBT-Linehan Board of Certification? (the treatment’s founder)
  • If the clinician utilizes DBT do they have all Four Modes of Treatment? (Individual Therapy, Skills Group/teaching, Skills Coaching, Consultation Team) Are they “DBT Adherent” or “DBT Informed?”
  • Are any specific diagnostic tests recommended?
  • What are the responsibilities of the patient or client or family? What is the mental health professional responsible for?
  • Do they prescribe any medications or have a prescriber they work closely with?
  • Will a written treatment plan be created collaboratively with the client?
  • How and when will treatment success be determined? Does the clinician use evidence-based outcome assessments?
  • Do they accept insurance or offer their services on a sliding pay scale? Do they provide a “Superbill” to submit for “out of network” claims? Does the practice submit the claims or does the client submit the claims? Do they contract for “Single Case Agreements”?
  • What professional organizations do they belong?
  • Where did they attend school? What educational activities have they been involved with over the past several years?
  • How will any after-hours emergencies be handled?
  • Does the mental health professional collaborate with others in the practice?

Remember: You can verify the license of any practicing mental health professional by going to the Florida Medical License Search page.
